Texas Extends Health Coverage Enrollment Period for Newborns to 60 Days

August 12, 2025

On June 20, 2025, Gov. Abbott signed SB 896 into law. The law extends the automatic coverage period for newborns under group health coverage provided through multiple employer welfare arrangements (MEWAs) as well as small employer health benefit plans, from 32 days to 61 days after birth. This extension effectively extends the deadline for participants in those plans to enroll their newborn and pay premiums. The requirements outlined in the law take effect on September 1, 2025.

Employers covered by MEWAs or who offer small employer health benefit plans should be aware of this change.
